Question 1

Which one of these *feathered* proverbs is found in the Bible?

Birds of a feather flock together.
A fowl of the air shall whisper it in the king´s ear.
A little bird told me.
A bird of the air shall carry the voice.
Many of the sayings we have today probably originated from the Book of Proverbs in the Bible. Many children have been mystified by a mother who said that a little bird told them when asked how she knew about the child´s wrongdoing. Perhaps she had read Ecclesiastes 10:20, "Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter."

Question 2

Which of the following is the biblical proverb?

Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
What you do unto others shall be done unto you.
What goes around, comes around.
"Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?" Proverbs 6:27 The context of the verse pertains to adultery, as seen in the two verses following it: "Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? So he that goeth in to his neighbour´s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent." Proverbs 6:28,29

Question 3

Which proverb on laziness can you find in the Bible?

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.
A lazy man leaveth his field unto others.
The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
"The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing." Proverbs 20:4 Another interesting proverb on laziness is found in Proverbs 22:13, "The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets." Pro. 22:13 This, though, is my favorite "lazy" proverb: "The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth." Pro. 26:15 This just has to be where the saying came from about a person being too lazy to feed himself!

Question 4

Which of these *fruitful* proverbs is the Biblical one?

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
An apple doth not fall far from the tree.
Every good tree bringeth forth good fruit.
One rotten apple spoileth the whole barrel.
"Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit." Matthew 7:17 By the way, did you know the Bible does not say the fruit Eve gave to Adam was an apple, as many people think? (Genesis 3:6)

Question 5

Just one of these is from the Bible. Do you know which?

It is vain to lock the stable door after the horse hath been stolen.
A prudent man foreseeth the evil and hideth himself.
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.
You cannot teach an old dog new tricks.
"A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished." Proverbs 22:3 The same verse is repeated in Proverbs 27:12.

Question 6

Which statement about money is in the Bible?

Money is the root of all evil.
Neither a borrower nor a lender be.
Filthy lucre bringeth forth evil intentions.
The love of money is the root of all evil.
"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." 1 Tim. 6:10 Money is a necessity. We all need some of it, but the "love" of money -- greed for wealth or the power money can buy -- is the evil.

Question 7

Can you pick the Biblical proverb from the others?

Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry.
When one has a will, there will be a way.
Half a loaf is better than none.
He who steals from his neighbor shall be judged by his neighbor.
"Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry." Pro. 6:30 However, the thief is still accountable. If he is caught, he is to pay back "sevenfold," even if it means he has to give up everything he owns. (Verse 31)

Question 8

Which of the following is found in Proverbs chapter 31?

Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Beauty is skin deep, but ugly goes all the way to the bone.
Beauty is as beauty does.
"Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised." Proverbs 31:30 Solomon ought to have known something about beauty -- he had 300 wives and 700 concubines! (Or "porcupines" as we sometimes say in jest!) While Solomon is called the wisest man who ever lived, he certainly didn´t have much wisdom when it came to women, did he? To put it in today´s thoughts, can you imagine 1,000 pairs of pantyhose flapping in the breeze, the same number of mothers and fathers-in-law to fight over your holiday visits, or the number of smelly diapers there must have been? I don´t even want to think about all the birthdays and anniversaries he had to remember! I´m sure not even Solomon could have kept it all straight, even with the help of today´s electronic organizers!

Question 9

Which of the following is found in the book of Proverbs?

A rolling stone gathereth no moss.
He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
"He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again." Proverbs 19:17 When you find yourself lacking, try giving something away. It works for me!

Question 10

Only one is a Biblical proverb. Do you know which?

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind.
Every cloud hath a silver lining.
"He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart." Proverbs 11:29 It appears we can inherit a lot of things besides money! (I wouldn´t mind TOO much having a rich uncle, though, and being his favorite niece!)

Question 11

Can you pick out the proverb from the Bible?

A friend in need is a friend indeed.
Necessity is the mother of invention.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.
"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones." Proverbs 17:2 Lauthter has be medically proven to be a great healing aid. So have a few clean belly laughs now and then! It will relax your whole body and you´ll feel like you just had a good night´s sleep.
