Celebrity

It seems everyone is obsessed with celebrity. Some people will do anything, no matter how degrading, to become one, and some people want to hear about celebrities constantly. No matter where you go, there are blogs, TV shows, newspapers, web sites and magazines dedicated to endlessly talking about celebrities. So what does the Bible say about celebrity?

First, you should not seek fame by doing scandalous deeds. Joshua is famous, but because the Lord is with him, and he is brave. (Joshua 6:27). Solomon was famous for his compassion and wisdom. (1 Kings 4: 29 - 34).

But even better than celebrity is humility. Matthew 23:12 records the words of Jesus: “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” God is not impressed with fame. He is impressed by those who are humble and who know that alone they can accomplish nothing, that all things come through God. 1 Corinthians 1:26 - 31

What does the Bible say about times I feel unloved, worried, etc?

When You Feel...(Part II)

For all the negative things we have to say to ourselves, God has positive
answers. When you feel:

*…you can't manage, God says: I will supply all your needs (Phil. 4:19)
*…afraid, God says: I have not given you a spirit of fear (II Tim. 1:7)
*…worried and frustrated, God says: Cast all your cares on ME (I Pet. 5:7)
*…too tired to go on, God says: I will give you rest (Matt. 11:28-30)
*…you're not smart enough, God says: I give you wisdom (I Cor.1:30)
*…alone, God says: I will never leave you or forsake you (Heb.13:5)
*…you can't forgive yourself, God says: I FORGIVE YOU (I Jn. 1:9; Rom. 8:1)

How can I face death?

Death--Illustration on Death

A sick man turned to his doctor, as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, "Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side."

Very quietly, the doctor said, "I don't know."

"You don't know? You, a Christian man, do not know what is on the other side?"

The doctor was holding the handle of the door; on the other side of which came a sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, "Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing...I know my Master is there and that is enough." --Unknown

How can I have eternal beauty?

Beauty

Our culture is obsessed with physical beauty -- a temporal thing at best -- but true beauty comes from the inside. How can we get that beauty that will never fade?

"The Bible emphasizes the eternal over the temporal, and the spiritual more than the physical." writes Dr. David Jeremiah in Turning Points Magazine & Devotional. "It's a good practice, then, to spend more time gazing into the mirror of God's Word (James 1:23) than into the bathroom mirror. It's important to spend more time reading the Bible than thumbing through glamour magazines or mail-order catalogs. The world is passing away, but whoever does the will of God endures forever."

"Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth." Col. 3:2

What is a good verse to turn to when I need grace and patience?

Grace, Patience

The Apostle Paul had learned about grace and patience when he penned this scripture:

For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. 2 Cor. 12:8-10

What is a verse on trials and testings?

Testings, Trials

Life is composed of sorrows, trials, joy, happiness and other variants. During the hard times, our human sight is limited. We only see the separate, unsightly bits of thread underneath our "Tapestry of Life." But as Christians, we know we can trust our Heavenly Father who is weaving the finished product into a beautiful work of art.

"Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ`s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 1 Peter 4:12-13

What does the bible say about grief or grieving?

Grief--More on Grieving

David's prayer when grieved:
Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly. For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed. Psalm 31:9-10

Jesus Christ knew about grief:
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. Isaiah 53:3,10

Other verses on grief:
But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies. For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men. Lament. 3:32,33

For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. 1 Peter 2:19

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Ephes. 4:30

Charity

Sometimes Christians forget that we are called on to be compassionate and generous. They see someone in trouble, homeless, poor, asking for money or other kinds of help and think, "Not my problem." People can make many kinds of excuses to justify turning a blind eye to others: they asked for it, it's their own fault, I don't want to help those kinds of people, if I help it will just encourage them to be lazy. But is this the attitude the God asks of us? In 1 John 3:10, the Bible clearly says,

This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.

Think this doesn't apply to beggars, the homeless, people on welfare, charity? Think again. 1 John 3: 17-18

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

Final Destination

Christians often read the books of Paul or others in the New Testament which speak of "despising the world" and "being in the world, but not of it" and think that this means everything on this earth is bad. This, however, is not true. Some things are bad. Many selfish and immoral attitudes, customs, and behaviors are bad. But if we remember Genesis, when God made the world, the animals, the birds, the waters, He pronounced them good. We need to take care of our natural resources. We can enjoy God's creation. However, we must always remember that this earth is not our final destination. As Christians, everything we do should be with an eye turned toward reaching heaven, our real home.
