November 1, 2002, Newsletter Issue #71: *Rainy Day Kit* for Depression, Part 1

Tip of the Week

My personal "Rainy-Day Depression Kit" for short-term depression includes:

1.) Cards on which I have written favorite Bible verse promises like, "They that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength..." (Isa. 40:31) and "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." (II Tim. 1:7) These verses give me strength when I remember that nothing ever happens without God`s knowledge and He always keeps his promises. When reading my Bible, I write down verses I come across that help me personally and put them in my "kit" for later. For example, Matthew 6 has several verses that always help dispel any financial anxiety I might be going through.

2.) Tapes and CDs of favorite songs that uplift my spirit and turn my mind toward God and worship. Depression and thankfulness cannot co-exist at the same time. If I turn my heart toward praising God, the depression will have to go! I`m prone to forget between times just how much a good song for the heart will lift me out of depression, but if I have it in my "kit" I won`t have to remember which one it is; it will already be there without any decision on my part. (And when you get depressed, any decision can be overwhelming, even if it`s just a minor one like what tape to listen to.)

More next week! Remember, God loves you and Jesus has experienced every emotion you could ever go through, including the very worst one of feeling abandoned by His own Heavenly Father.

Verse of the week: "…your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him." Matthew 6:8
