Christian Quotes on Friendship

The following five quotes are tops in how they can be adapted to a variety of uses. They are also effective for most types of friendships, from the childhood buddy to the maid of honor at a wedding.

1. From the medieval Jesuit writer Baltasar Gracián, on the importance of friendship:

"Friendship multiplies the good of life and divides the evil."

2. From Saint Augustine, on the importance of friendship:

"Without friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods."

3. From Colossians 3:12-14, on how to treat friends:

"Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony."

4. From John 15:12-15, on loving friends:

"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you."

5. From Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, on the necessity of friendship:

"Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up."
