Saint of the Day: Saint Josephine Bakhita

Saint Josephina Bakhita was born in Daurfur, Sudan. She was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery. She was passed from hand to hand until she ended up with an agent of the Italian consul, Callisto Legnani. He treated her well, and when he began making plans to go back to Italy, Josephine asked to go with him. She became a nanny, then a Catholic, and eventually started serving with the Canossian Daughters of Charity. In 1893, she joined the order. She didn't do big, glamorous things, but all the things everyone does: cooking, sewing, cleaning, sweeping. She prayed in the chapel for others, and for the conversion of her family, and treated all kindly. People like to confide in her, because they could trust her. Josephine stayed cheerful and grateful for all God had given her until her death, and was canonized as a saint in 2000.
