The Pretentious Life

1 John says, "Do not love the world or the things of the world.

If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

For all that is in the world, sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life, is not from the Father but is from the world."

It's easy for most people to remember to thank God for their material blessings. Some preachers would have you think that God does almost nothing but bestow material blessings on those he loves, and that if you are poor, you don't have enough faith or you are doing something wrong. This is nonsense.

As this passage from 1 John shows, we should also be on our guard against being too proud of, and involved with, our possessions, our nice homes, our cars, our money. "The pretentious life" is something to be saved from, not something to be aspired to.
